7/3/2023 0 Comments Odd Girl Out by Ann BannonI mean, some of the problematic elements that are in virtually every lesbian pulp were still in this one - Laura initially believes that she can’t be queer because queers are, well, sad ugly butches, and the bisexual (although of course the word bisexual is never used in this book) character, Beth, cheats on both Laura and her sort-of boyfriend, Charlie, and constantly lies to both of them. This was fun, I liked both of the main characters, and the book is (relatively) sensitive. I also love that the exact same shade of red is used for the girls’ lips and nails, it looks amazing.Īnn Bannon is one of the heros of lesbian pulp fiction, and there’s a reason for it. The two tormented femmes, posing in a waythat suggests but doesn’t outright state lesbianism. Odd Girl Out - Ann Bannon, originally published 1957
